      THE HISTORY OF KIENANDO KUNGFU

Kienando is originated from Traditional Vietnamese Martial arts combined with ancient Shaolin Kung Fu. All techniques have been analyzed, modified and modernized to cope with the world progress in defense and offense system. More or less, some fascinating moves of Kickboxing, Karate, Jujutsu, Western Martial Arts, Aikido, Kenpo, Judo, Naginata, and several other martial arts styles have seemingly made significant contributions to the present Kienando.
In parallel with the highly developed martial arts all over the world, during the last several centuries, Vietnamese martial arts have also been glowing. To protect and enrich national martial arts are the purpose.
Kienando has its own dynamic forms and techniques. Plenty of foot works and hand works such as kicks, punches, throws, elbows, fists, sweeps, weapons has been carefully composed and improved to better the training.
Furthermore, KIENANDO Kung Fu is also a study of philosophy and development of skill. It focused on both external and internal power such as modernized fighting arts to become more effective, pressure points and Chikung, a very good method of breathing and mediation.
Vietnam has a few ancient martial arts officially acknowledged worldwide: Binh Dinh, Vovinam, Volamdao, Thieu Lam Kien An… The present Grand Master of Thieu Lam Kien An is Nguyen Lam, who is also the founder of KIENANDO. Grand Master Nguyen Lam is from Kien An province. In Vietnam, there are two famous martial arts regions: Binh Dinh is in the Central and Kien An is in the North. An Lao and Kien Thuy are two reputable districts in Kien An. An Lao District has been recognized as the older brother of Kien Thuy in martial arts techniques. Two outstanding villages in An Lao are Lang Son and Xuan Son
In 1945, when Grand Master Nguyen Lam was still a young boy, his parents taught him the Kien An martial art styles with some special techniques only instructed to selected members of the family. During this period, he ventured to Do Son and fortunately met with great Grand Master Thai Quan, a well-known ShaoLin teacher, to learn more about kung fu and distinguished features. In 1950, the famous Grand Master Hong Sac Kim accepted him as a student (currently Grand Maser Hong Sac Kim is over ninety years old and still teaching kung fu in France).
In 1954, Grand Master Nguyen Lam and his family migrated to the South and lived in Saigon. In an effort to further advance martial arts training, he got in touch with Grand Masters Ho Cam Ngac and Pham Loi (who were outstanding instructors of Judo and Karate in South Vietnam in 1950s, 1960 and early 1970s). Together, they exchanged knowledge of defense and offense methods.
The first Vietnamese who graduated from Judo Kodokan University was Professor Ho Cam Ngac. After studying the martial arts in Tokyo, Japan for five years, he returned to his homeland in 1948 to promote the Japanese martial arts to the Vietnamese.
Also distinguished was Professor Pham Loi who returned to Vietnam from France in 1955 with extensive knowledge of Judo techniques. The first Professors of Judo who contributed generously to create the Vietnamese Judo Federation in 1956 were Thai Thuc Thuan, Dang Thong Tri, Phan Van Quan, Vuong Quang Ba, and Venerable Thich Tam Giac. Professor Dang Thong Phong, a younger brother of Professor Dang Thong Tri, established the Vietnamese Aikido Federation in 1964.
In 1972, after receiving special training from Malaysia and the United States, Grand Master Nguyen Lam went back to Vietnam to open a martial arts school. There were many foreign students and they found Thieu Lam Kien An were difficult to pronounce, therefore, they called “Shaolin.” At the time, the term “kungfu” was very popular, Grand Master Nguyen Lam changed it to Kienan Kungfu. The international name of Kienan Kungfu today is KIENANDO.

Teaching Philosophy

Kung Fu is not a merely physical activity. While kinesthetic movement is the basis for this skill, there is so much more to martial arts study! Kung Fu balances the body, the spirit and the mind; it harmonizes and strengthens us inside and out. Kung Fu also teaches confidence, leadership skills, self-discipline and to defend one's self. It is all of these facets and many more aspects of martial arts study that is the philosophy of the Shaolin class.

In the class room, students are taught not only to kick, punch, and move like martial artists, but also Meditation and Chi Kung training are taught at every class period, to harmonize the mind and spirit, renew energy, and to dissipate aggression and anxiety. The weeks after the mid-term are dedicated to learning and performing both a Kata, or form, as well as several self-defense postures. These two distinct applications of the basic techniques the students learned in the first half of the semester are very popular with students - they can identify with the great Kung Fu heroes of contemporary popular culture, and their enthusiasm is obvious. I encourage the students to perform these techniques during class time practice as either soloists or in small, student led groups, strengthening leadership skills and growing self-confidence.

Another aspect of Kung Fu training that I focus on are the influences from the great Asian philosophies - Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. These three philosophies are encountered within the reading materials and lectures I give in class, but are also a basic foundation of my lessons, which highlight mutual respect between student and teacher, patience, compassion, fairness and reliability. In this way, Kung Fu feeds the soul of the student, encouraging interior growth and self-examination.

Teaching Kung Fu is my passion, and I have devoted my life to it. Not only because I believe it is a beautiful and ancient skill worthy of safekeeping and handing down to future generations, which of course, it is. However, I believe that these skills - physical, intellectual and spiritual - better the student, and promote in all people a betterment of the self. It is my goal that students leave my class with improved health but also as improved people, inspired by experiencing the ancient and beautiful traditions of Kung Fu.

Accomplishments and Contributions

The Shaolin Kung Fu class is very popular, with both sections being full, semester after semester. And yet, there is no "Kung Fu 2," or "Advanced Shaolin Kung Fu." Every semester, many students express an interest in continuing their studies of Shaolin Kung Fu, and in light of there being no other classes on the subject, follow me to the Kienando Kung Fu Studio. Most of these students have stayed with the Studio for many years, attaining Black Belt equivalencies and becoming teachers at the Studio themselves.  One of my students, Ms. Lynelle Miliate-Ha, a young woman who first attended my class in 2002 or 2003, has received her Red Belt, Second Stripe (the rank of a Kung Fu Master,) and has travelled as far away as Vietnam to perform Shaolin Kung Fu in a very important event there, the International Martial Arts Festival, with martial artists from all over the world. She is one of my successors, and has been assisting me in teaching the class for many years. When I can no longer teach the Shaolin Kung Fu class, I propose for her to take over the course, as she is eligible and worthy of it. Another student who took the Shaolin Kung Fu course twice has recently received his Yellow Belt (Black belt equivalent) First Dan, and has since changed his major to Kinesiology, inspired by his experiences teaching Shaolin Kung Fu under me. This, I think, is my greatest teaching accomplishment: To inspire a passion for Shaolin Kung Fu in so many students, and to have those students dedicate their lives to the pursuit of a Mastery of Kung Fu.

My contributions in the last three years are the same contributions I am dedicated to for the next three years: providing an excellent educational experience through unique and exciting coursework. Martial arts studies are very central to the popular culture at this moment, and the class is structured to encourage a fun and rigorous physical training as well as the philosophical exploration that students have come to expect from Shaolin Kung Fu.
